WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

This is a Conway Duel. Two players submit a Conway's Game of Life instance each that compete in the Arena.

WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE? HOW DO I WIN?

You win by amassing more points than your oponent. Usually, this is accomplished by submitting a Game of Life that runs longer than your adversary's.

HOW DO I START PLAYING?

Submit a binary string of length 256 that represents the starting configuration of the Game of Life instance you would like to enter into the duel.

I DON'T HAVE A BINARY HANDY...

Don't worry! Below Player 2's starting binary input field you will find a little tool that helps you find a binary that meets the duel requirements.

WHY CAN'T I SUBMIT THE GAME RECORD?

You likely submitted a binary that did not meet the challenge requirements.

WHAT REQUIREMENTS HAVE TO BE MET IN THIS CHALLENGE?

The binary string must have the exact length of 256 (since each Game of Life is played out on a torus of 16x16 cells) while the sha256 hash representation of the binary needs to start with 444 to be valid (other binaries can be played but no game record is allowed to be submitted).

HOW IS THE SCORE CALCULATED?

For each cell of the Arena that a player's side holds per game turn, a point is added to the score.

WHY DOES MY GAME OF LIFE STOP?

The Conway Duel only considers unique iterations of a given Game of Life starting configuration to be valid game moves. Game of Life instances that end in repeating patterns (flickers, gliders) are terminated once they reach a configuration that was reached before already.

WHAT GAME OF LIFE RULESET IS USED HERE?

The Conway Duel uses rules B3/S23 played on a torus with a grid of 16x16 cells. The hash representation of each Game of Life configuration is calculated by inputting the binary representation into the sha256 cryptographic hash function.
